Joel began his career at the Dallas office of an international law firm where, among other things, he defended pharmaceutical companies against allegations of off-label marketing and other FDA violations. Before joining the HDBD team, Joel worked as a senior attorney at another major firm, where he represented Halliburton against thousands of claims arising from the Deepwater Horizon blowout and oil spill. Joel is experienced at developing strategies, defenses and trial plans and executing them in line with client goals. He counsels clients on legal issues related to: operational best practices in the oilfield, Maritime Law (including the Robins Dry Dock doctrine), the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA), the Clean Water Act (CWA), and the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA), among others. Joel is well-versed in the operations and practices involved in drilling oil wells, including those pertaining to offshore drilling, casing, float collar conversion, cementing, well integrity/pressure testing, and mudlogging. He also is knowledgeable about conventional and specialty oilfield cement design and testing.

Areas of Practice

Joel grew up on a farm in Eastern Washington state, where he milked cows daily. He is a life-long Seattle Seahawks fan.
